Fairly often around Exp0sed, a new thread is started which eventually has something to do with spyware or virus'. So the intent of this thread is to be a clearing house of info scattered around the site which should help our members figure out problems they may encounter. It should be said that none of us here are experts on the subject, but we can certainly lead the reader to people and websites that are.

In order to keep your machine clean there are some basics that ALL computer owners need to follow. Moreso for PC's (vs. Mac or Linux) using Windows, but Mac users should follow the same instructions since more of this junk is starting to pop up for that platform. Just remember the old adage, "better to be safe than sorry."

So, some software that everyone should be using:

1. A firewall (your first line of defense). First off, there are hardware and software firewalls. Everyone agrees that you should, if possible, be behind a hardware firewall (usually known as a router) but there is some disagreement about the necessity of software firewalls "IF" you are already behind a hardware firewall. Some say software firewalls are redundant and slow your machine while others suggest, basically, that nowadays you need to take advantage of every tool at your disposal. But, DO remember that if you are NOT behind a hardware firewall, you MUST use a software firewall. And don't rely on the Windows XP firewall. It only monitors incoming traffic, not outgoing. One of your first clues that you've picked up something nasty may be that your software firewall monitor all of a sudden lights up on the outbound side.

Some good free software firewalls:

A. Zone Alarm (unless you really need all the bells and whistles, just download and use the free version, it works just fine).

B. Tiny Personal Firewall v. 6.5.92

http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,8051,00.asp

2. Anti-virus apps:

I hope, by this time, that everyone recognizes the necessity of a good anti-virus (AV) app. The only thing of real concern is to make sure that it updates daily and checks for virus' daily. Also, for the time being, the author cannot recommend using any of the Norton (Symantec) products. Not sure what has happened to them but they are now more hassle than they are worth.

Free. AVG: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5

Good, but not free, AV's:

A.McAfee - http://www.mcafee.com/us/
B.F-Secure - http://www.f-secure.com/

3. Anti-spyware. The main thing that needs to be said here is, do not rely on just one app, not one of these will find all instances of spyware, so you need to employ several. Also, be very careful about using any other anti-spyware apps as there are a lot of crap apps out there. You'll usually know these when, after you download, install and run it, it finds some spyware, says it can get rid of it, but for the price of $29.95 (or whatever). The author has found that the following do a pretty good job of finding what your liable to run into (and all of these are free):

A. Spybot Search & Destroy: http://www.safer-networking.org/
B. AdAware SE Personal: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
C. MS AntiSpyware Beta: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
D. Spywareblaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

One last thing. If you find that you can't get to any of the above sites, then, more than likely, your already infected. You may have to download the apps from another uninfected machine to get them onto yours.

4. Browser

Use Firefox and quit using Internet Explorer (IE), it has far too many security flaws.

http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/

Also, if your doing a lot of porn or celeb surfing, make sure you install the "NoScript" extension. It could save you a lot of headaches from "drive by" attacks.

https://addons.mozilla.org/

5. Windows Services. If you don't know what these are, LEARN. However, make sure you understand what your doing before turning any of these off (as you could really mess up your machine). But once you do know, you'll be surprised at how many you can turn off, thus speeding up your machine and making it less vulnerable to certain types of attacks.

I would usually only reference Black Vipers page here as he's the first, that I know of, to really tackle the subject. But his site is down at the moment, so I'll include some sites that mirrored his.

Any other advice?

Do u know of a program that will detect any "open" ports on the computer(s)? :computer:
The security issue with IE made me choose Firefox as my "default." It bugged me that Windows told the entire internet of issues that were discovered.

Hi all,
I have been clean for 3 years and I do ge where the dirt is so here is my fav's on secerty software. I'll give you its name and ruffly what it dose, the rest I'll leave to you.

FireWall, online armor (takes a lil knowlage of your os to correctly run, my advise if unsure is to block without a checked box, and if something messes up next time allow)
Antivirus, Avast (has multi moduals that scan differnt things)
Addware, Spybot S&D (as mentioned above. this has a registry scanner, and know bad site blacklisting. Pluse it dose a good scan too)
Adaware (now it has a real time scan witch is good it even catches viruses before my avast)
IP blocker, peer guardian 2 (massive block lists keeping them "the man" out)

all free, but this much safety comes at a price. my box runs them fine but I dont recomend all of them if your under 512 ram, even then it is going to hurt.

I hope this helps someone.
