I have a client who wants....and they might be right about their needs....to install Small Business Server. I'm on the MS site now trying to get a better feel for what it will do. I'd love to trade notes with someone with some experience with it. Anyone out there used it? I PM'd Min.

Well all a server really is, is a big ass computer. So if someone wants a "Small Business Server", thats just fancy talk for a kick ass computer.

Just get a huge processor with lots of onboard cache, and lots of RAM and maybe a few hard drives to set up a RAID

Well, I'm not as interesting in the hardware as the software. Supposedly, if you are under 50 users, Small Bus Server provides:

  1. An exchange server
  2. VPN capabilities (I've always thought I needed a firewall to get that)
  3. An Outlook web interface
  4. Shared faxing
  5. Blah, blah, blah

Call me a cynic, but when any software company lists all the things it's product will do, I assume about 20% of it is empty promises. Click here to see what Gates promises.

you can set up all that stuff with regular windows if you know how to do it. i would assume that package is merely the "idiot proof" way of setting it up, point and click you know.

as far as licenses go, you can buy as little as 10 for most things i believe, not sure about that particular product.
