Anyone interesting in the beta of IE 7 can download it here. http://www.soft32.com/download_997.html I've used it for a couple days. No biggie. Supposed to be more secure. It has tabbed browsing which is nice.

It also has an anti-Phishing thing that compares the web site you're going to with some database. If you're dumb enough to give your user name and password to a bank site, you don't deserve to live. Just sounds like another DNS to me but I don't know much about it.

Keep in mind this is beta. Make a good restore point before you install.

I still use IE 5 only because when I have used IE 6, I could never get online. When I tried Firefox, it hardly ever worked. So I am content with IE 5. Why improve on something that is okay?

kaboom, its not the browser, your computer is broken. you're also asking for trouble by having such an old version (bug and security hole wise)

the only reason why IE 7 might be decent is because they stole all the new features from Mozilla/Netscape/Opera.

microsoft has rarely ever developed any of their own revolutionary features

I've tried it a total of three times, and it never has worked. And no, my comp is not broken, one of my tech friends even looked it over and said it was in good shape and that he couldn't figure out why Firefox wouldn't work. He called his coworkers (he's one of those "Geek Squad" guys) and they couldn't figure it out. So I just gave up and make sure I keep up to date on my Antivirus and my firewall. No big problems really.

Just because someone claims to be technically inclined, doesn't mean they are. Thats why we have certifications

Anyway, what I meant was, your computer may be fucked in such a way that it doesn't matter how many times your uninstall / reinstall, its still not going to work.

A sure solution would be to format and reinstall Windows (back up your porn first of course lol) I format my computer at least a couple times a year. Keeps it fresh, kind of like spring cleaning.

For what it's worth Kaboom, I gotta second what cman just said. There is not a hardware reason that IE 5 will work but other browsers will not. It's software. You've got some deep WinSock registry type problems. You need a brand new registry. I too rebuild mine about twice/year. It's a pain but worth it, esp after all the crap I put mine though.

I just rebuilt (at the insistance of a strange client) a Pentium Pro 200 MHz with Win 98. I was surprised how well a clean install worked on that fossil. If that could get anywhere, yours will get anywhere.

Kaboom,

I've gotta agree with CMan and Preferred. There is no reason that Firefox shouldn't work on your computer. Its time to repartition and reformat. I haven't found the need to do that as often with XP as with previous versions (with versions up to 98SE I did it at least twice a year) but its still a good idea. Just remember to back up everything of value and try and get all of the drivers you will need prior to the reformat. Make sure you have those drivers on a separate, easily accessable disk.

Just to see if it would work this time, I tried Firefox again. It worked. I don't know if I was doing something wrong or what, but it works. SO I don't need to do all that shit.

OK, I'm not a patient man. I don't care what browser you use, but the reason I've always given up on Firefox is that I couldn't get to some sites and just didn't want to work it through. That's why I uninstalled IE 7 today. Couldn't get to my online banking, something I do almost every day.

Back to IE 6. I know it's not as secure but I've made it work. I never have an issue. The tabbed browsing is nice, but I want my browser to work everywhere.

I've used firefox since last night and today and it's already gone. I couldn't get used to it. So I am with my IE 5, though I may upgrade it to IE 6 this weekend.

IE just has way too many problems. Firefox is just way more secure, and a lot more stringent with its coding standards. I find that when creating pages, IE lets so many things go (like not closing tags, sloppy javascript etc).

Firefox all the way! I'm trying to get my IT Security guys at work to go along with it as well.

I registered Opera recently (when was free registration), and I've been using it for a while. The best browser in my opinion. Firefox is also good, but Opera is better. E-mail client, chat (IRC), everything in one....just great!

Good luck, I'm trying to get the guys at my web company to do the same. It's taking a while, but I think I've got 2 of them switched. :)

I haven't used IE regularly for over a year now, unfortunatly for web dev. for general purpose sites you still need IE just to check if it isn't a total mess for the 80%-90% of people still using it :(
