MoneyTalk by Conman

No surprises or underdog favourites from the Conman. The way the groups pan out, it is very clear cut.

Here are my picks with the first team topping their group and the second team taking the second qualifying spot:

Porto & Chelsea from Gp H
Valencia & Inter from Gp G
Barca & AC Milan from Gp F
Arsenal & Pana'kos from Gp E
Man U & Oly Lyonnais from Gp D
Juve & Bayern M from Gp C
Real & Roma from Gp B

Group A holds the only so-called upset for me. I think Monaco will top the group with Liverpool fighting out a close call with Depor for the second spot. I believe it may go down to the wire with Liverpool qualifying in second spot. This is the only group I won't put money on.

maybe not head to head in a match, but i think they willl be at the top of the table. from what i saw in the eurocup rooney is incredible, if he plays liek that all the time...him opposite van nistleroy would be a sick combo

Robson out, Toon plunged into turmoil

Results for Monday, August 30, 2004
Man Utd 0 v 0 Everton

Looks like they're really in trouble. They, as on Saturday, look like they've lost their shape and discipline. Give them top marks for determination but they've ridden their luck for too long. They needed the woodwork on two occasions to save a clean sheet. Also deja vu was the goalkeeping form of Everton's Nigel Mansell, very much akin to the splendid display by Brad Friedel (Blackburn) on Saturday.

Conman, Zinista......Hello again. I have finally decided to give the world another go lads after my shameful departure following Englands cruel exit from the Euros. The Premiership is certainly looking good so far this season for the neutral, but as a Liverpool supporter I think I will need to get used to being served up with mediocrity for a while. The club is very much in transition and things are looking a little shaky at the moment, however the future looks bright under Rafa and his signings, given time, look like they may become Anfield greats. As for the people in gamblers corner (I'm looking at you Conman!) I don't see any sense on betting on who will win the league as there can only be one winner again this year and that's Arsenal (obviously there's sense in betting on them if you've got lots of cash and you can find a decent price, doh!). Chelsea may run them close though as they have been able to grind out results even though they are also a team under new management with new players. I think in the run long, Arsenal will prove too strong. I'm going to stick my neck out and predict what I think the top of the table will look like come the end of the season

1. Arsenal
2. Chelsea
3. Middlesbrough
4. Liverpool
5. Aston Villa

That's right, even with my anfield-tinted specs off, I can't see Man Utd finshing in the top 5. I also think that this is Slur Alex's last season as manager as his recent signings have been nothing short of woeful (including spending a small fortune on Rooney - the lad has only played for 18 months and I think this is a gamble that Alex will lose).

Anyway, I won't be posting too often, but I'm sure when I do come back on with my luck Man Utd will be top of the league with Rooney scoring 20 in his first 4 games!!

Its a two horse race. Liverpool and Utd are allready 7 points off the pace, and Chelsea and Arseanl are yet to drop a point.

Fixtures

Saturday, September 11, 2004 (Moneytalk predictions - winners in bold)

Aston Villa v Chelsea
Bolton v Man Utd
Fulham v Arsenal
Liverpool v West Brom
Man City v Everton
Borough v Birmingham
Newcastle v Blackburn
Portsmouth v Crystal Palace

Sunday, September 12, 2004
Tottenham v Norwich

Monday, September 13, 2004
Charlton v Southampton

That's right. I am expecting a round of upsets and surprises. Chelsea did not have the luxury of having all their Internationals for training this week and will be out of sorts. Injuries and doubt will continue to plague Man Utd. Although I put Arsenal down for a win, (only a fool wouldn't) I have a feeling a draw may be on the cards as Fulham always come good in the big games.

Preview

This is the start of the group stage competition. Group G is the group to watch with three domestic Champions, Valencia, Bremen and Anderlecht. But non of them have won the ultimate European trophy while Inter has won it twice.

Chelsea and Porto in Group H are expected to go through but watch out for upsets by PSG and CSKA who can be quite impressive on their day.

As always, Real are expected to go top of Group B and advance. A slugfest for second place is expected and I am tipping Roma to go through.

In Group D, 2 time winners Man Utd have a relatively easy group with three teams that have never won any EU honors.

Group A is similar situation with 4 time champs, Liverpool up against teams with no EU pedigree but the competition in this lot is going to be far more exciting with Depor, Monaco and the unpredictable Olympiakos.

Group C hold three former winners in what will be the group of Champions. Bayern Munich, Ajax and Juventus have 10 EU titles between them. God help Maccabi.

Likewise in Group F, AC, Celtic and Barca have eight titles between them and Donetsk with no EU pedigree at all.

And for the neutrals, Group E looks like the most interesting match up of Greats that share onlly three titles; PSV (1 Eu Cup and 1 Uefa Cup) and Arsenal (1 Uefa). Its amazing when you consider that these four clubs (Panathinaikos and Rosenborg included) have huge followings in their respective countries, are regarded as elite teams and haven't won any Eu titles in ten years. This group has been dubbed the group of Eu underachievers.

Thanks Zin. But I am not a happy man about two results ...

Fucking PSG didn't play like they wanted it and Porto ... )*&@#^& .. WTF man? I did say that CSKA could produce upsets but Porto ... DEFENDING CHAMPS? held at home? What a waste of money man.
