Sup people,

I was just wondering what virus and spyware programs you guys use and how effective they are. I am currenlty using AVG Free Edition for virus' and Spybot SnD for spyware.

Also I am looking for a good registry cleaner that finds illegal or bad references in the registry.

Any suggestions?

Spybot is one of the best. I also like Pest Patrol.

I find spybot the easiest to use, though there are alot of things that it won't delete.

The new Microsoft AntiSpyware is a reworked Giant Anti-Spyware, it is pretty thorough, if you are cool with Microsoft.

Marketing and Brainwashing aside, the only product that Microsoft makes thats actually BETTER than its competitors is Office.

hijackthis
spywareguard
spywareblaster
spybot with teatimer
ad aware

i am still learning, as is everyone, but i work with a variety of computers for my job, and have been actively dealing with spyware for about a year and a half now... the above five programs keep most spyware off my systems, and delete what it cant prevent... if there is any spyware/adware/malware on my machines, i am unaware of it...

i have heard that microsofts new anti-spyware program is VERY good, but havent done anything with it myself yet... kinda want more opinions from more folks that know more about computers and such than the average person would..

there is another thread here somewhere that is more detailed than this one is presently in regards to spyware and anti virus programs... some names i recall hearing in there are antivir and cwshredder...

hope this helps, if even only a little..

I have MCP, CNA and A+ as well as an Info Systems Specialist Diploma and I worked for a year as a tech in a computer store. Oh yeah, I also have a network of websites. Is that good enough :D

Yeah, I think that is enough.

Along with the above mentioned, I also use AntiVir XP. Takes a while but it gets rid of a lot.

All great suggestions, what about Registry cleaners, cman mentioned Registry Cleaner, have that, but it is kinda secretive. It says it found X problems with certain things but doesn't tell you what the problem is and just fixes it. I would like to know what the problem is.

What do you mean it doesn't tell you. It tells you all the files and registry entries that are affected. Did you try expanding the lists?

HAHA good job and pimpin the fox Pimp, but you can still get spyware from sources other than the web, such as P2P or email.

Mozilla Thunderbird for email!!! :D

for the record, i PERSONALLY do not have any spyware probs worse than a few tracking cookies that i am too lazy to do anything about... the spyware probs i see are on my customers home computers...

cman, your credentials are great, i would never question them... have you used microsofts new anti-spyware thing, or are you just using (with good cause) past experiences??? is it bad overall?? does it plug holes that my other progs dont?? is it worthwhile as a supplement to what i have?? i am not looking to use it as a replacement, as i distrust microsoft, but its new enough that i really dont know much about it...

xp service pack 2 gives you the option to nuke any popup, any time, on any website... it also allows you to allow them on certain websites... not THE answer, but it is a help...

I haven't actually used Microsoft's Anti Spyware thing, I don't think.

I do however, STRONGLY RECOMMEND, that everyone install XP Service Pack 2 RIGHT NOW!!

It improves security immensly and I myself have had no problems with it. I know some people have, but i'm betting that whole thing has been blown out of proportion.

I've got Spybot S&D, which worked great, but then I got Cleanup!...Ever since I've been using it, Spybot tells me I've got no problems...the only problem with Cleanup! is that you have to (well, you don't, but it's better if you do lol) shut down when you use it...however, this is from someone who is by no means an expert on things "computical" lol.

I've used AVG for about two years and have had few complaints. The only one I can think of is that periodically its update function will download extremely slow. When this happens I just cancel the download and update manually. That usually works fine.

As far as anti-Spyware is concerned, I use the same as Cableguy and have, again, had few complaints. You cannot use only one as none of them will get them all. Check out the "about:blank" thread for more info.

The one thing you didn't mention is a firewall. That is your first line of defense and has, today, become a necessity. I've used Zone Alarm for several years now and it seems to work fine.

I could of swore there was another thread on this already. As I stated in there, Giant has always been one of the best.

The other thing I stated, was that if you are wanting to pick a Spyware program to PREVENT, then just about any of them will work. If you are wanting one to get RID of Spyware, then you are already screwed. There is not one out there that will take it all off.

The only true way to get rid of Spyware is to wipe it (computer) all out and start over. I tried for over 3 weeks to get rid of it, 4 different programs and even hacking the registry, but I had to wipe it all clean. I too am running the new Giant Microsoft one and have had no troubles.
