file sharers and download managers?

every file sharing site i go to now has a download manager. a few times i wasnt careful and downloaded some EXE file that would let me download the file. im am paraniod about exes file no way im clinking them on. im not tech savy. can anyone explain the spread and use of download managers please? i just picture them filled with adware at the least.

My personal opinion is that these filehost download managers must be avoided like the plague.
Most filehosts claim that their "download managers" will provide some perks to improve your download/upload
experience but the reality is that they are often a means to spread adware/malware/ransomware.
It is better to be safe than sorry.

has anyone tested to see if they do indeed contain malware? any articles on this i have to start researching. a small part of me thinks its the government that behind it.
