Read a guy somewhere on the web criticising it. He says the battery life shrinks to about 2-3 hours when you watch video's on it. Says you can't download ripped video, only iTunes video.

Anyone know the truth or have any experience yet?

No experience with yet here. I don't think I'll be dropping that kind of cash into a video unit like that. I'm more of a music person and the thought of having to view a movie or tv program on a tiny screen like that doesn't really appeal to me.

And if it's only iTunes downloaded videos, then I definately won't be buying one. However I'm sure someone will find a way around that if that is the case :)

They keep comming out with better ipods every 6 months. I bet next year they'll have one with a bigger screen or one that has a phone built in. Or maybe an email feature. I'd hold off getting one cause you'll just want the better one when it comes out.

I've been trying to decide on which "portable media device" to buy and its a tough decision. I'm trying to get one that does as many different things as possible, is the right size and of course, for the right price.

I'd like to get an Archos one, but they're too friggin expensive.

I will probably end up getting a PSP. It does pretty much everything you want, the only disadvantage is the lack of hard drive. But they make memory cards up to like 4 gigs now, so that would be the same as an Ipod basically.

my main purpose isn't music, which is why i don't simply get any old mp3 player. my main purpose is videos and pics and internet and stuff.

Yes the battery life on the ipod video goes down to about 2-3 hours when watching a video, and for good reason: rendering videos takes up a lot more cpu and graphics power than playing music coupled with the fact that to play it you have to constantly be accessing the hard drive (whereas with music, songs are loaded into a cache, so there is much less hard drive access).

You can take all sorts of videos and compress them into a format that the ipod video can read (even dvds), you are not limited to the itunes store.

i think the ipod screen is too small relative to the total size of the unit. ie. they waste too much space with that stupid dial thing, trying to make it look cool.

function over fashion would dictate having small buttons that perform the same function rather than a giant wheel.

The screen couldnt get any bigger unless you make the iPod itself bigger. If you reduced the size of the wheel, then you could make the vertical length longer, but it wouldnt be a square or a golden rectangle or a whatever shape theyd want it in. It would be an ugly, funny looking(not fashion-wise, actually view-wise) manilla envelope shaped screen, which is just illogical

they could turn it sideways.

look at the archos players, they are like 90% screen with very little "button room". even the PSP is at least 3/4 screen

Woohoo, why dont we make everything a battery eating device with a breakable screen. Though my current iPod Photo maybe a little cliche, I'm happy with it. I dont think they should turn it sideways, because it would be just a bad structural idea in my opinion. I look at the archos thingy and I see a digital camera with identity crisis. I dont want that, I want a proud and confident didgital media player, one that is proud of itself image. And for those of you "anti-Pods", I know youreout there, would you hate me even more if you saw me holding my iPod sideways as I walk down the sidewalk watching a movie. The iPod is fine, while a bigger screen would be nice, its not needed.

It all depends on what you're looking for. if you're looking for "fashion" go with an Ipod. I'm looking more for function.

Let me tell you people something, Video iPod is fucking great.
I have a PSP, It is ok, if you want to play games, but MP3's and videos are a complete fucking hassle unless you are willing to buy a memory card as expensive as the PSP itself. I would put a couple 15 second clips of lesbians going at it and shit like that. but with the little 32mb card that came with the unit, that holds about 3 or 4 clips. While my (5G)iPod has 6 full dvd quality flics and about 8 episodes of girls gone wild and not to mention some of the great videos i got from this site. It has over 700 songs I have downloaded from various p2p applications and I still have so much space on it I can't think of shit to put on it (more porn). I take this little fucker every where I go, to class, the mall, everywhere.
I thought iPod was just a scam before I realized you do not have to buy music from apple, you can just hit up Kazaa or morpheus. I am not a mac user, I haven't used an apple computer since elementery school, but I am loving this iPod gadget.

You should see the new shit apple is coming out with, a true Video iPod complete with touch screen technology.
Sign me up.

P.S. Battery life absolutly sucks when you are watchin video, 2-3 hours, I wish.

P.P.S. I have some huge video files and I would love to share with you wonderful people, any suggestion where to upload them too, they are mostly dvd rips and range from 150 to 700 mb, holla at me.

You can watch ripped video on a Video Ipod (videora is the program for converting video into something ipod viable).

Battery Life is aweful. Consider replacing it with a high density battery (should double/tripple the life).
