When I play high definition video files on windows media player 10 it skips like it can't handle it.
My system:
2.6ghz athlon xp
1gb ram
128mb nvidia graphics card
windows xp pro
wmp 10

It's alot to keep in the cache (HD movies are around 4GB, dunno what your playing) but you many want to get more RAM in order to handle the larger files sizes. Or see if WMP 11 helps.

skipping would probably mean that your system is having a hard time keeping up. it could also be the fact that you don't have enough RAM and it has to keep swapping back and forth to the pagefile.

its always good to use the best player possible, but you might also want to make sure you have enough system resources. if you don't want to buy more RAM, then trying closing as much stuff as possible before playing the video (especially stuff that is running in the background unecessarily)
