CD ROM Drive won't read anymore

H

hoppi

Hey,
my cd rom drive is about 2 and a half year, funtioned without any problems, and all of a sudden, it went totally crazy today.
I even burned the last CD about 2-3 days ago.
I put in a old Ghost Recon CD yesterday which it didn't read and it began to spin "endless-ly" (<-?).
So today it continues with this crap, it doesn't any Audio CDs, normal Data CDs and DVDs...
It's a drive from a Fujitsu Siemens-Laptop and it would be a pain in the ass to send it all in.

hoppi,

When an optical drive goes there really isn't much you can do about it other than go buy a new one (and they are fairly inexpensive nowadays). But you can do a few things.

First, open up your case and make sure that the cables attached to the drive and mobo are tight (there are two or three cables).

Second, if you have spare cables, replace the existing ones and see if that does any good (probably won't).

Lastly, if neither of those work, replace the drive.

Hope that helps.

another solution

open up your drive and use a magnifiying glass to look at the IR-eye, the small glassthing inside your drive.
there could be a hair or other dustpartikel on that.
I was having the same problem and it was caused by a hair on the readers-eye.

Alright, so far it burns and reads Audio CDs again, which is enough so far. If it burns Audio CDs, I'm sure it'll do Data CDs.

What I did was to clean the lens a bit, well I tried to, and I pushed this thing -where the lens is stuck to- around a little bit with brute force because it didn't move at all first, but -no worries- when I got it to move I stopped with my powerful force. :p

Well, after having burned an Audio CD and enjoying the working drive, I inserted the driver CD for my new Bluetooth Stick and it ticked off again. Like yesterday. Sooo ... don't have a clue here.

hoppi,

Well, I'm glad that its working at the moment but I'd start saving a few bucks for a new drive. Nowadays they just don't seem to last that long. I will say that I'd start looking at Sony drives. I have nothing to back that up (as far as optical drives are concerned) but many of their other products seem to last fairly well.

Weow. Why didn't I see that answer?

So: Yep, you're right. I am already putting back some money for a new laptop, preferably a hp or ibm model...

I'd just buy a new drive. Get a super-fast DVD burner from newegg for about $30 shipped.

Is it a Phillips? I bought one of their drives along time ago and the thing melted on me... they upgraded it and it melted again... I hate their crap. Don't buy Phillips brand anything.

ok sorry but the solution was way easy and no one seen it, They said the reader eye mount was stuck he gave it a push and it worked for awile agine. a drop of good old oil on the moving mechanism and the moter to would have fixed it up. (mabe less then a drop, you dont want splater.) it was just getting stuck. sorry to post on such an old thread but theres your solution way to late to help, mabe someone else will come acrossed this and it will help them.
