Ok guys, I need youre help again!!:) Please excuse my english.

I bought 4 Western Digital drives (external) for backup use. All of them worked and functioned, or so it seemed.

One of them that I only used to move a few gb of data to suddenly stopped showing up under "my computer". I guess I can mention that this is 1 tb disks.

The one disk that I have problem with was showing up since I bought it (on saturday) and yesterday on my laptop, but today it didnt show up, I tried to move it to my stationary pc but that didnt help, it would not show up there either.

It starts up, it runs, but is obviously not recognized by my computers???
The disk has not been hitting the floor or has gotten any bangs in case you wonder!!:)

I could just return it for checking, but the few files I moved to it is porn, so I just feel alittle bad about that!!hehehe
The embarresment for that is something I can take if no one here has an idea of what is going on!:)

Is this typical for Western Digital disks? I have only tried one of them before, and that on wouldnt let me use the whole space, it stopped at 300-320 gb (it was a 500gb disk). That one I got help with and works just fine now.
But is Western Digital something to avoid???

There is no software coming with these disks, so its not a software problem. Or at least I dont think so since the other 3 disks is working.

I have the Hirens cd, Im not familiar with all the programs there, does it have some program that can try to find it??

Now I have mentioned all I can think of, and really hope someone here can give me clue!!

Thank you so much in advance!!!!!:)

Did you try to reread it under Windows.
You can use Windows Diskmanager for that. If it does not recognize the disk then try to access it under DOS.
If that failes you might have a problem with the disk. (throw it away)

I assume the disk is standalone and not part of a scusi-systeem.

Right click My computer, manage, disk manager.

If it dose not show up there your screwed as far as I can help. I would also try hooking it up to your mobo. I have had troubles with external cases before.

Good luck.

Thank you to both of you for youre replyes, but as I have allready said, windows does not connect with the disk. It doesnt matter wether you use my computer or disk management.

I have played around alittle with the Hirens cd and found a program that is called test disk or something like that, this program found the disk.

Now all I need is some help with picking a program from the cd that can help to retriev the files on the disk before I return it to the store (there is a 30 day free return service there).

My problem is that I dont know any of the programs on the cd, so if anyone have knowledge of some of the programs and can give me a little step by step instructions it would be very helpfull!!!
It is very easy to ruin the files on the disk by using those programs the wrong way.

Maybe I can find it in DOS, but I have no idea about working in DOS, I dont know about any of the commands to use.

I will be very thankfull for any help here!:)

It is very strange that an external program run on (i presume) the errored PC (under Windows) SEES that disk.
DiD you really "re-read" the disk in diskmanager or did you just looked for it?
What happens if you buy or use a HD/usb convertor?
It is very strange

Maybe I misunderstood you, but It was probably more likely that you did not understand us.

windows does not connect with the disk. It doesnt matter wether you use my computer or disk management.

What?

Maybe more info is needed from you.

Disk manager will show hard drives even if my computer won't. You probably just need to enable the drives, witch is only a few clicks. your externals should show up as mass storage device.

GrapJ, this is all yours.

yo PTB, i am not that good with this, i always use diskmanager and it always works.

yo blondie, It's not allocated? and you cannot (right click on disk) re-allocate it?

That's strange, i cannot help if this does not work. You can try this 5 times and suddenly it will show.
Try powerdown the system, remove the disk, restart and shut down.
Now connect the drive again and try again. This must work, if it does not then you are probably missing a step in the process.
You must manually order windows to reread/allocate the disk. DO NOT FORMAT!!
Windows is very happy to do that for you but it is not necessary and would be stupid now that you know that the disk is readable.

Good luck

blondie32,

Under diskmanagement in windows 7 it shows up, but it says its unallocated? What does that mean?

Basically, that means that Win 7 recognizes the drive but not the partition. So it wants to know if you want to make the partition usable. To make it usable you would have to format it (probably NTFS).

This is strange, it did not show up under Vista or XP!!??

My guess is that there is something intermittently wrong with either the drive or the case. If you were to turn it on and off ten times and check it with Disk Management each time, it would show up in each OS two or three times. But thats only a guess.

Any advice?

You do know that any HD you purchase has to be partitioned and formatted prior to use? Maybe you forgot to format this one. If not then you really have no choice since its on warranty. You'll need to take it back and get another.

My advice is to keep trying to see the drive in DM and, once you can see it, format it and take it back. That is, of course, if you have the files on it someplace else. If not, then you're going to need to find someone that knows what they are doing to get those files off it. And that could be expensive.

Lastly, see if you can find Seagate HD's. I've used them for years now and have had very few problems with them. They're just about all I use nowadays.

Good luck.

Right click the drive in disk manager, look at your options. I would try and give it a letter, I usually make my externals x,z, y or what ever you want. (change drive letter and path . . .)

Format will remove all the porn you put on it before you return it.

If you can't get to the files and you want them I would open the external, take out the drive and plug it into your mobo, should be pretty simple. from there you should be able to get to the files.

Also look for an enable drive option. (mark as active)

Thank you everybody.

I took a hard drive repair tool from the hirens cd and runned it, it found (and supposedly fixed) ALOT of bad sectors, like 80% of the sectors where bad.

I run partition magic, since it now seemed to be ok, but the program says error when I choose the external disk.

I have kind of decided to cut my losses, tried to format the damn thing but it will not even format!!:(

If I open up the case to put the drive in my PC I will not get to to return it anymore, the cases this days are not easy to open!

Oh well, shit happens and I guess I have been lucky so far and never had any hard drive crashes before. I lost like maybe 20 gb of data, but all in all that is not so bad. The other 3 disks I got are full, but they all work and most of the data on them I also got on old drives.
Back to store with it tomorrow! Get a new one!:)

Just out of curiosity, Mindido mentioned the need to format and partition new disks. I have 15-16 external drives, and some loose disks that I use in an external cabinet, I have never needed to do this, just plugged them in and used them and never had a problem untill now.
Maybe I will start to do this from now on, and I might even run a check too before use!:)

Ok, got alittle sidetracked there, anyway, just wanted to thank you for the input and help!

You cannot format?

there is a program, it's under DOS.

delpart.exe (no link, cannot link local)

Be really careful whit that.

I did not go past this step, but used it in the past succesfully.

I know the program will overwrite all (NTFS/DOS) Boot-related sectors.
While doing that it will destroy all mirror, data, FAT and partition- information on the disk. The data will remain but all pointers are wiped.(overwritten)
Endresult: All of the bits on the disk are now available.

I fix lots of broken computers and deal with lots of hard drive issues. If you are using windows 7 and the disk shows up under disk management, but it still won't let you partition or format it then the disk is bad. Furthermore, ANY drive that has as many bad sectors as you're talking about needs to be replaced. A few bad sectors can be repaired, but when you've got 80% of them being reported as bad that should tell you the disk isn't stable. I have never successfully recovered a hard drive with that many bad sectors. Also, you should always format and partition a new hard drive when you get it. Don't rely on the way they come out of the box.

Partition Magic is old software. It works great with xp, but I didn't think it was supported with Vista or 7. Maybe that's because I use the 64 bit edition of windows 7 though.

If you're using Hirens boot disc I'd recommend using HDD Regenerator, or you can download Data Lifeguard Tools from the Western Digital website. The Seagate tools will also work on Western Digital drives. If the drive is new than it should be under warranty. Send it back and get a replacement.

Keep those programs in mind for future references. I wouldn't waste anymore time screwing around with this drive though. It's not recoverable in my opinion.
