Hi, guys, i need seriously help.

Yesterday, while i was surfing the internet, my computer suddenly froze then restarted stated with warning stating: "Warning, your computer is infected with Spyware!" I had to boot my computer in "safe mode."

I found the spyware, its called "Antivirus XP 2008." Unfortuantely, I am having problems getting rid of it. I downloaded free trail spyware off of some site. It fould 343 spywares on my computer including mentioned above. So I hit the "delete" key to get rid of it. My computer "got rid of it" or so i think it did...i say this because when i rebooted my computer again in normal mode the "Antivirus XP 2008" starts again. I went to control panel as well as the spyware's folder to uninstall it, it did. I don't have it showing anywhere, but it keeps reloading when my windows start. WHAT SHOULD I DO!?!!

I tried system restore, but i can't go back to previous month of June. It only give me option for yesterday July 6th.

Also, after I supposively got rid of this spyware, my "Appearance and Themes--Display Properties" is ONLY showing "Themes, Appearance, and Settings," with no "Desktop and Screensaver" showing.

I have Windows XP 2000, I use Windows Defender (works perfectly in defending against adware) w/ no spyware, and i use Norton antivirus 2003 free from Penn State. Lol

Please, please help me. I desperately need it. How can i bring my computer back to normal.

Thank you!!!

OK...I'm no expert...

Try this: Control Panel --> Add/Remove Programs

Or

Format your hard drive and reinstall windows.

Ok i will try and see if it helps. I also searched spyware threads earlier for any reliable ones. I will also try them. I just don't want it to start when windows start. If its off my computer then it shouldn't be activating.

think i may have had this problem (different app name, same effect)

its not that you didnt remove it, but it has auto-run features, which are input to your registry, to run the installer and start the process

it can be solved, if slightly harder than mentioned without a format of the hard drive, BUT, it does require finding the file it is re-installing from (a self extracting cab file or something, which may not even appear to be linked to the file)

clear out all temporary internet files, and all temporary directories on your comp. then remmove the adware (best done manually, but can be effective with good anti-spyware, anti-malware & anti-virus)

i suggest

1. spybot search and destroy
2. registry mechanic (maybe not, you have to pay, and can mess things up with this one)
3. avg antivirus

with 1 & 3 running on your machine, you should be safe

also, try running online virus scan (i used to use panda when in doubt, but that was when i used NAV)

1. Download, install and update: spybot s&g
2. Download, install and update: adware by lavasoft
3. Download, install and update: avg Free (after removing garbage norton)

Dude, you could also use spywareblaster which is free and it's good I guess. I also use spybot which is quite good. It also has this teatimer thing which looks for registry changes at runtime and informs you of any changes. Apart from that, trying to fix the registry requires a lot of googling and expertise. But can be done

Re:

Hello Kevin2000,

You may have to if a virus is found clear previous restore points, but not until you first make sure you know what it is and that it is gone first. The programs mentioned by others are good choices to try and before running them(spybot,ad-aware etc.)make sure to update them first and use immunize in spybot s&d and also go to eset.com or bitdefender.com and try a free scan.

Also super anti-spyware is a good program(make sure and update before running, plus try and run as many offline program scans in safe mode as you can and before running the offline scans go Start-click on my computer-go up to Local Disk (C:)and click once to highlight it,then go up to tools click for menu go down to folder options and open that, then in folder options click view and uncheck(do not show hidden files and folders and uncheck hide extensions for known file types)then click apply, then ok. After all your scans are done go back and recheck these two again.

Try this first and see what you get and let me know if you need me to clarify any of this better.

Also spyware blaster is a good program(as mentioned by others) but it is more for prevention beforehand and not a scanner for after the fact,so when used for what it is for it does help alot.

I dont know if youve had this problem, but for me system restore will only work from safe mode. Id try that if you havent yet.

Either way be more careful about what websites you visit, bopping along looking at random porn sites is probably one of the fastest ways to catch a virus. I know from experience.

Gl and keep us updated. Ive got a few more ideas if you still have trouble.

Edit: Im not sure how to help you with your Display Properties issue, if System Restore is successful it should take care of that.

Thanks everyone for your contribution in helping me restore my computer back to normal. I installed Spybot as well as Spywareblaster, and instantly, the virus or spyware was deleted. My computer is now running normal and with faster speed.

Again, thank you!

Good to hear!!! Also if you have not already, try the firefox browser which also works well with spywareblaster and is usually more secure than IE.
