It would also allow them to compete as a world power against such power nations as the US and the emerging China.

Elmer I’m afraid isolationism isn’t new in the US. We’ve always wanted to keep to ourselves, but too much of the time that means we don’t take responsibility for our place in the world. Then suddenly we snap and bomb a bunch of brown people. Unfortunately, it just seems we wanted to kick some ass after 9/11…we didn’t care much who’s ass it was. 15 of the 19 highjackers were Saudi. We’ve done nothing but kiss their ass.

one almost wonders what those complaining about the saudi problem would do if the bradleys, the m-1s, the gunships, the bombs, the missiles, and the soldiers were aimed at knocking down the saudis... then one realizes that most of them cant stand war of any kind, and would oppose it as well...

BOT

go to google, type in "french military victories" and hit the "im feeling lucky" button... follow the link to a history of the french in conflict... posted before, but a worth retread...

Some jokes about the French are very amusing, but in reality it is rather sad that the US Republican party uses the French and also the UN as a scapegoat to divert attention to the mess they have created in the US and the world. I think it works because most Americans don't understand other cultures than their own as many don't have the money to travel outside their own country and meet people with a different culture. Hopefully the Democratic party or people like John McCain and Colin Powell will be in the position to regain the goodwill that the US has lost in many places of the world.

Saying that the GOP uses the French and the UN as a scapegoat is a pile of crap. The French and other countries bitch about US foreign policy, yet when something terrible happens to them or the boogey man is knocking on their door, it's the US they call first.

amen, tex...

gatsby, i HAVE had occasion to travel and meet people from other cultures... not a lot, granted, but if you take away canada and mexico, an ocean hop is required to get to these places... in any case, i will stay here, and continue to think the way i do...

france and the un are more than just scapegoats... they deserve every ounce of criticism levelled at them, and more... as for the good will the US has lost with other nations, please tell me exactly what this supposed "good will" is worth, and why it is necessary, or even something to be preferred... history show--repeatedly--that good will only extends as far as agreements on policy... there will be differences, and as such, good will between nations is gained and lost at the drop of a hat... therefore, it is worthless... nations do not have friends, they have interests... i believe that one belongs to Sir Winston Churchill, but regardless, it is true... what has good will ever done for the USA, or for ANY nation??

gatsby, there is an ocean of difference between the way Americans think, and the way the people of most other nations think... first, if we truly wanted to be completely self sufficient, we could be... second, without risking ones own complete destruction in the process, it is impossible to conquer or destroy the US militarily... third, the US has a long and storied history of fighting in wars that do not involve us... for the freedom of others...

hundreds of thousands of Americans have DIED so europe wouldnt have to live under the thumb of germany (ww1), the german nazis with their death camps (ww2), so asia wouldnt be stuck living with the brutal japanese (ww2, the r@p3 of nanking, etc), so the world wouldnt be crushed by communism (post ww2-early 90s), and most recently, so terrorism will not be the same threat it is today (which is much reduced from a few years ago)

living in a nation with the history we have lends a perspective you cannot possibly hope to relate to.. conversely, living in a nation that is relatively small and doesnt have a dramatic impact on the global economy, that because of the constraints of population and land area, simply CANT feed the world, toss a dictator out of a neighboring country, or free the whole of europe from nazi opppression is not something i will ever be able to relate to...

we come from different places with different perspectives... what you see as arrogance is usually frustration, sometimes misplaced (rude Americans in foreign lands are not something i deny or excuse), but not the naked arrogance much of the world accuses us of...

do we in America want to be more like europe?? nope.. not a chance... you can keep your socialist governments and double digit unemployment... you can have your grossly overburdonsome taxation and regulation policies... we have it bad, but you have it far worse... government services are nice, but the more government pays for, the less everyone gets... if government payed for everything, everyone would have nothing... (this is due to the necessary addendum of a 100% tax rate on everyone, which would result in no one showing up for work, which would result in no wages being payed, and no taxes being collected)

mccain and powell are weak willed individuals... powell claims he has no aspirations for elected office, and i hope he is being honest... mccain, i wish would just go away... he is disruptive, wishy-washy, and has repeatedly shown his inability to read and comprehend the US Constitution... also, most of your news is grossly liberal... not your fault, really, but not exactly an accurate portrayal of what happens, either..

A NOTE TO THOSE FROM NATIONS ALLIED WITH THE USA IN THE WARS/CONFLICTS MENTIONED

thank you, but though it would have taken longer, the job still would have been done... thats the way we are.. sometimes late to a fight, but once there, there to win... at least when politicians stay out of the way...

This weekend we celebrate Trafalgar Day. Its now 200 years since the Battle of Trafalgar when we the Mighty British smashed the French (and Spanish) navy and thus thwarted the invasion plans of Napoleon. This battle gave the British control of the seas and was as important as the domination of Europes skies during WW2.

The hero of the hour (well more like 6 hours) Admiral Lord Nelson was killed by a French sniper during the battle and wreaths were yesterday laid on his tomb in St Pauls Cathedral. His flagship HMS Victory will (or has) fired a broadside to mark the celebrations, it's first action of this kind since the battle itself.

The Quenn lit the first of 1000 beacons across the country and later dined in Nelson Quarters on Victory on Friday.

His most remembered quote prior to battle (well flag signal) was "England expects that every man will do his duty."

See even 200 years after giving France a good twatting we take pride in it. The Spanish had the good grace to attend to commemorate their dead, the French invitation must have got lost somewhere as they were curiously absent.

God what would we all do without the French? They're like that kid in Jr. High who thinks he's better than the rest of us so we all just keep taking his lunch money.

I can say something similar about the US. Right now, they're like the bully in Jr. High that beats up other kids who don't play by his rules. Just because the US has a few aircraft carriers more than other nations doesn't mean it should dictate it's beliefs to the whole world.

About the goodwill, you wouldn't notice the lack of it until you really need it. It's like having many friends, but none shows up when you're in the worst period of your life. Do you really think the US can always make it on its own?

gatsby, i absolutely KNOW the US can make it on its own... we import a lot of stuff, but it isnt anything that cant be made here (more expensively)... we also export a LOT of food... we would lost cheap trinkets and the rest of the world would lose food... like it or not, the US has by far the largest and most prosperous economy... we take things for granted that people in other successful economies dream about or cant comprehend...

as for the "rules" you speak of... last i checked, the US supports freedom, is against terrorism, is for open markets, and thinks it has an obligation to some concept known as "human rights." some of these things, we go fight over... what "rules" are you talking about, and by definition, do you oppose?

as an aside, if the USA was dictating its beliefs to the whole world, there would be a LOT more bombs being dropped...
