Hi all. I have a question.
Is there a tool for fixing the windows xp registry?
By fixing i mean to restore windows applications registry values to
their original ones?
Cause lately i've been having some serious trouble.
Media Player won't start
Search is not showing the search options
and i bet there are others that i haven't found yet.

Thanx for your help people.

system retore will do that. System restore only affects the registry, when you make a restore point it just takes a snapshot of your registry. Runnin system restore will replace your registry with that "good" snapshot.

If system restore doesnt work you can use a free program called Ccleaner.
Download here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/

If that doesnt work, then your only option is to do a full destructive recovery.

Good luck!
Tell us how it works out for ya.

If your original settings are recovered from an available system restore point, you will also lose functionality of some registry dependent program/system settings that have been installed/changed since that restore point date.
E.G., if you have updated your Windows Media Player, the newer version mat not work as you expect with the previous version's registry settings.
In fact, if certain changes/updates have been made to your system the System Restore process will report that it cannot restore your system to a specific restore point.

System Restore crossed my mind
So i tried to access the program
but no GUI was shown although the program was running
in task manager.
I will try ccleaner
but i have another question.
Can windows xp be overwritten or reinstalled without loosing
all programs?

P.S. Thanx for your support. Sometimes i really think if it's time
to go Ubuntu

vdimitr,

You can just overwrite your current xp install by sticking the CD in and choosing repair the current installation, but, at least in my experience, its a waste of time. It usually doesn't fix your problems.

Bite the bullet and reformat.

Yup...reformatting will make a lot of things better. You'll clean up your computer of all kinds of things that can't really be cleaned off very easily. Just get an XP disc and reformat...back up all your stuff before doing it...and you'll be good to go! It's good to do a reformat every once and awhile...

Bite the bullet and reformat.

I guess i'm gonna have to do it but there might be a slight problem
Since this is my notebook (toshiba) and i can't find the companion cd
it came with. So i'm afraid that many of the internal hardware
(modem, graphics card, touchpad, etc) won't be installed correctly.

P.S. Once again a big THANX to all of you guys for your concern.

vdimitr,

If your going to do the reformat, its really important to go to the manufacturer's website BEFORE the reformat and download ALL of the updated drivers. That simple step alone can save a lot of headaches during the process. Oh, and make sure that those drivers are on a separate drive before the reformat. It's really not that hard to do, but is well worth the while. I usually reformat mine at least once a year as, invariably, XP overwrites some (supposedly) protected file and things start to screw up.

Heh, heh. Man, have I said that a few times over my life. Just go ahead and do the reformat. You'll find that you waste a lot less time that way.

Good luck.

I'm sure you're right. But i just fixed (figure of speech) my old pc a 600MHz AMD and now it's serves it's purpose for downloading (emule). I tell you mates installing win98SE was a real piss off.
I tried ubuntu but that didn't work :(
As far as my notebook, i guess i'll wait until I hear the sound of inevitability.
Thanx guys for your replies.

@Dolemite

For the time being i'm using SPYBOT. It's quit nice since it alerts me if any program tries to access the registry.
The only problem is that the window doesn't show very well.
Thanx again.
