torrent recs and program copy

any recommendations on quality torrent sites to use? i had used a couple before, but stopped a while ago, because i was busy. but i was wondering if anyone could give me suggestions on the most reliable torrent sites to use. thanks.

Also, there was program loaded onto another computer. I was trying to copy it and load it onto mine. I copied the folder, from the Program Files folder area, and copied all the files in the folder for the particular program. the "setup" file was in the folder. When I put the cd in my computer and tried to run the setup it wouldn't let me. I know the program was loaded onto the computer by cd, but I don't know if there is a way to extract the program and put it on cd, to where it works, so I can upload it to mine? I had no problems in the past with other programs, but this one is proving difficult. I don't know whether it makes a difference if the program was loaded onto the computer through the admin user, and works through other users, but to obtain the files to run and load the program, whether I have to get them through admin, or whether they are in another place on the system, where I can grab them.....if that makes sense.

I use Bit Torrent and Torrentloop.

I'm familiar with Bit Torrent somewhat. are the search and available files to download embedded in the program, or is it seperate, where you download the program to be able to download, and have to go to the site to find the files. is there commentary by other users to find out whether the files are safe and clean?

I use Bit torrent for my Downloads and use torrent loop for my searches. Bit Torrent is very reliable and is pretty fast. Torrent Loop has all the comments and stuff like that.

my manager is uTorrent

and i use demonoid.com, torrentz.com & mininova.com

best thing with torrentz.com is list of all trackers, and you can add them if u use uTorrent(right click on torrent -> properties -> paste in trackers), more trackers = more seeders :)

I can't help you much with torrent sites but I've heard that utorrent is a pretty good app.

If I understand what you are describing here, this will virtually never work. When you install an app in Windows (all versions) they place files all over the place with some going into whats called the Registry. Thus, unlike the old DOS days, you can't just copy and paste a folder and expect it to work. There are a few exceptions (very few) to this but it would be best to figure out the name of the app you were using and then just download it and install it. Much simpler.

Adobe Flash CS3 is the program, though I'd prefer Adobe Flash CS4.

While I agree when installing an app it does spread it, and concerning the registry, the registration code and there's an exe.pf file == but sometimes it's different, and I wont get into it because it's long to explain, but moving on. Flash CS3 was installed on Win XP. I didn't have time to do a full search. I just went into the Program Files folder and copied the Adobe Flash CS3 folder, because I had seen the setup file in the folder.

OK, I'm familiar with that app. So I take it you never had a legal copy of the CS Suite? Well, I guess you could try looking for it at Pirate Bay. They probably have copies for download. Some may even have keys for the suite. But be careful as these things are known to have malware in the DL. Also, I've heard that Adobe is pretty good at keeping track of its software nowadays so you'd probably want to turn off any updating or error reporting (if that even does any good).

CS3 places files in the C:\Windows and C:\Windows\System folders that I'm sure of but I think they also create at least one folder for the Suite.

The problem is that unless you are the app programmer, its virtually impossible to know where all the files are placed and what is modified in the Registry and elsewhere. You could probably spend days (if not weeks) trying to figure out where everything is and the changes that need to be made.

I've had legal copies and usually buy all my software, but I can't afford the new versions right now, at least Flash CS3-4, which I unfortunately need right now.

i know for certain that a lot of the programs when getting them from toreents do contain malware, but most of time it's in the keygen. i search the comments but it's always a mixed bag as to whether it contains viruses or not. i can get a serial key its just a matter of getting clean software.

Hobbam,

OK, I understand. The CS packages aren't exactly cheap. You don't have the original disks for CS3?

I'd try Pirate Bay (I know other people that have done it) just beware and make sure you thoroughly scan anything you download from there.

Did you just have a HD crash or something? Is the old HD still good? I'm just wondering if you could continue to use the old HD (as C:\) and use the new one for files (D:\ and/or E:\). Just an idea (but won't work, of course, if you have a laptop).

I think what you've tried doing so far is pretty much doomed to fail as you'll probably never figure out where CS wants everything. Best to find the original disks if you can't slave the drives.

No problems here!

Lots of seeders!

What does everyone do here about scanning their stuff? What is the best way? Download it all then scan it or what? I've been getting a few viruses here lately...

Kane,

I can only tell you what I use and recommend. Right now I'm still using AVG for anti-virus but you should also have Spybot S&D, AdAware, Spyware Blaster, MalwareBytes and lastly, a new one I'm just trying out; SuperAntiSpyware.

Make sure they're all installed and updated. Download the file you want and then right click on the file and have each app scan the file. Its the only way to go with files from such sites.

All pretty good advice. I use BitTorrent or eMule and The Pirate Bay is the largest torrent search engine/tracker in the world. TPB is even in a huge court fight right now with the Swedish government who wants to shut them down. They really believe in what they're doing and they do it well.

Always have your virus scanner (and Spybot) active no matter what your doing and add your download folders as watch folders. The keygens almost always show up as a trojans or viruses but those are 'false positives' because they contain buried executable codes that the virus scanner is made to find. I've never had a problem with a keygen.

Its the malware that people put in the programs themselves that are the problem. Look on the tracker website for the number of seeders (that tells you how many people have d/l'd the torrent completely and are still sharing it - if it was bad, they wouldn't) and also at the comments. If a file is good or if a file is corrupt it'll be posted in the comments. If your sure that the file is what you want you can use it safely.

Actually, it slipped my mind, because I haven't done it in a long time, but I got it sorted out and got the CS4 version, and I didn't have to use the torrents.

I scan anything I download that's in a rar or zip file format. I update and do deep full system scans every once in a while.

I did have a problem a long time ago, which I posted about, about an new/old desktop, but I got rid of it and got a new desktop computer. I still have an old laptop, but I'm looking to scrap it. I use to use the laptop to download a percentage of files and make sure they were clean, before transferring them over to the "clean" computer.

I still may use the torrents on other matters.

But I appreciate the advice and help.

Don't scrap the laptop. Repartition and reformat the hard drive and stick Ubuntu on it. Then start playing with it. Well worth the while.

the laptop is close to 10 years old running off Win98.

there's a problem with the motherboard, and the memory wont read correctly. the memory was up to 192. it has a 20 gig drive with a cd/dvd drive, but you can't burn a disc unless you have an external drive. it's primary internet connection was the phone port, but has a card slot for wireless or ethernet (card) internet connections. flash drives dont work with it unless you have a hub. and the battery only holds a charge of an hour. it still runs fine, but there are all those issues.

It was a great high end laptop that did everything 10 years ago, until there was the motherboard issue that effected the memory a couple years ago, but now I just want to get rid of it and the external cd drive.

What price do you think I could sell the laptop for? I bought it for about $1800 back then.

I'm beginning to believe that MS is about to undergo some real difficulties because their OS is so full of security holes. You have to run all kinds of security apps today to try and keep a machine somewhat clean. If your a geek this is no problem, you deal with it. But if all you want is for the damn thing to work (which is where most people are) then MS is no longer the way to go. In fact, for most people I run into nowadays I don't even put an MS OS on a machine; I stick Ubuntu on it.

Your machine is basically done except that it would allow you to stick Ubuntu on it and start to learn it. Just start playing with it and when you get comfortable with it on that machine then stick it on another.

What price do you think I could sell the laptop for? I bought it for about $1800 back then.

The only value of the old laptop (other than learning Linux on it) would be a very few $$ for the old HD and possibly the memory chips. Maybe you could get $20 for those. Maybe.

Do a Google search for Ubuntu and then download it (its free). Let Ubuntu repartition and reformat the machine and have a go at it. It really isn't that difficult and may actually be the future of OS's.
