I'm encouraged to know that more and more people are using larger resolutions now. I hate 800 x 600 and I'm glad people aren't using it as much anymore. Its a pain in the ass to design for.

I've been doing a bit of work on peoples computers lately and the only people that I've noticed using 800 x 600 are elders. They use it primarily because the need it, they can't see higher resolutions very well.

I think you're asking a good question. CNN is my home page and it always looks a bit dated that they're set for 800x600. Same with the NY Times. Another site I go to every day, http://f1.racing-live.com/f1/en/ takes an interesting approach. Their general layout is still on an 800x600 format, but then they add advertising to fill out the right side of the screen.
When I'm on my backup desktop with my old 15" Sony CRT, I have to scroll around to see a lot of sites. I just figure that's the price of being too cheap to go buy one of these rediculously cheap LCD's.
