Maybe he can bomb Wisconsin. (Come on you know I'm just kidding!) :skeezy:
Yeah, I think we'd probably be about the last place anyone would bomb. We have one fairly large National Guard training base up north and thats about it for the military (other than your normal National Guard armory that most towns have).
You're right, it's not going to happen. The draft that is. If the Republicans were going to reinstate the draft they would have done it by now.
I agree, but I think the reason they haven't reinstated the draft is entirely political. If they would have, they would have absolutely NO chance of winning this years election and you WOULD see thousands (maybe hundreds of thousands) of protesters in the streets. Thats apparently the only lesson they learned from Viet Nam.
It's the Democrats who would start the draft and the first visitor that Obama or Clinton would receive would be Charles Rangel. He seems to have backed off a little but in July '07 he wanted to reinstate the draft for racial (class -economic - whatever) balance. Check out his web page at www.rangel.house.gov
I do remember Rangel's proposal. And, if I remember correctly, it was primarily an attempt to bring attention to the disparity (between rich and poor) of those actually serving in the enlisted corps. I don't think he ever actually intended to reinstate the draft.
But the point of our discussion was McCain's assertion that it was OK with him if the war in Iraq lasted 100 years. Well, if you believe what many of the current officer class, and many of the enlisted say, then how long can we stay there without a draft? If McCain is elected, and he wants to maintain all of these 200+ offshore military bases, continue the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan plus, probably, start a new war with Iran, then he will have little choice but to start a draft. He will have NO choice.
Thats another one of those reasons I think this election is very important. Especially for all you youngsters around here.
