how to cut mkv files

i want to cut mkv files and take the part i want. is there a software that can do that or do i have to convert the mkv to some other type of file and then cut it?
 
mkvmerge is best!
 
videolan vlc. play the video hit record at the spot you want then hit record again at the point you want it to end. vlc will also allow you to convert the mkv or avi files to mp4 by clicking on the media button.
 
mkvmerge is the best option for you, i think this tool it much powerfull
 
Did you ever try Boilsoft Video Splitter? They also have a Video Joiner, that goes along with it. They're not new programs, by any means, but I've been using them for years and they work great.
