need some help guys

I dont ask for much, and you guys helped me good last time i had a prob with a comp.. well a new one has just come up.

Windows is freezing up on me.. I can go to end taskand close it down, and all the files work fine, but when windows is up normally, nothig runs, I cannot click on any desktop items, or run any programs. I am going to try again to do a virus scan but the first one didnt run right. I took care of much of the spyware that was on here.

Any ideas of why or what is going on? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Which version of Windows (and service pack) is it?

Have you tried running a repair on the installation? Or system restore if its a recent version of Windows?

its xp... i have restore disks, but i dont want to lose anything if i dont have to... The restore disks go back a few months.. how else would I go about recovering..?

ugh restore disks. i fucking hate restore disks. god damn companies and their "customized" versions of windows.

why can't they just give you a real copy and be done with it.

anyway, can you run a normal setup with that disk, or does it do some kind of gay auto restore bullshit? if you can get to the normal XP setup, then you can run the auto repair thing. the only reason I thought of this is because it sounds like your installation might be screwed up somehow.

if you have the system restore thing turned on, it should be automatically creating restore points every couple days. so if you know when your computer first started screwing up, you can try restoring it to the newest point before then.

other than that, i don't really know what you can do. its kind of hard to tell what exactly it might be without having a look at it in person.

I would do a System Restore above all. If you don't know how to do it, here's how: Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Then click "Restore My Computer to earlier time" click next at bottom of same page. When the next page comes up, click on the date you want to use, then click next. When the next page comes up, click next and let it run its course, which includes shutting down and rebooting. Then log in as normal, and click ok on the screen that says "system restore successful" or something like that. There you go, a complete guide for System Restore. Besides this, I have no clue.

Honda I’m starting to get suspicious now. I did a search for PLUROF32.exe and couldn’t find it on my XP Pro. Worse yet, Google showed no results for it on the web or in groups. That, and the fact that there are no restore points coupled with the fact that you can’t run a virus check, makes me start to wonder if some little spyware/Trojan type bastard has gotten in there.

I’ve had way too much experience with this and think you’d be smart to wipe out your hard drive and start over. I do it every 6 months or so just to clean things out. You won’t believe how much better it will run with a clean install.

Can you run Windows long enough to pull your data (a.k.a., porn) off of there? It not, you can use something like a live Linux disk to boot up and get stuff off your hard drive before you wipe things out.

No shit. I'm got a major problem cause of this. My fucking desktop pc won't even start up. I get this message.

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

\System32\Ntoskrnl.exe

please reinstall file. Or some shit like that.

But I need a bootable copy of XP not a fucking restore disk.(Which I have)

I think I'm just going to blow it up.

I agree with you guys on those stupid restore disks. Supafly, you can just borrow a retail copy of Windows from somebody to extract that file and save your install. If not, it might be worth th $100 to go buy one rather than go through all the brain damage. You might be able to do an extract with that, or do a repair install as cman was talking about earlier.

Do burnt disks work, or is there some kind of protection on them. I know it worked with older versions, but maybe not XP. I can burn you a copy of my disk and mail it to you, if you want.

I'm working on borrowing a copy now. It has to be a bootable disk. I downloaded xp and tried to create one. But, I've come to the conclusion that it's impossible to actually create a bootable xp cd and If anyone ever tells you anything different they're a liar and they're going to hell.

Yea I haven't done it but I'm sure you can copy it as an ISO. If you just borrow a disk, you can extract the file off of any ole XP disk. If you do anything that asks for a CD Key, you need to borrow the exact same disk (like XP Home with SP2) for your CD key to work. I'm amazed how often Windows never asks me for a CD Key though.

This could be totally useless info, but you can go to bootdisk.com to get the bootdisks for floppy. It takes like 7 fucking disks for xp but it works. There is also a website that i can't remember where you download specific files you need in case of corruption and whatnot. Also everyone needs to know about http://www.snapfiles.com/ Every program is free and they have everything from popup killers, spyware and virus removal, graphic tools, security, and system utilities. Just remember to use Freeware and not Shareware.

if you get a copy of XP, run the "repair" feature and it should fix your problem, if not you most likely will have to reformat the pc. If you have another pc that has win 2k or newer you can connect the bad hd to it to save your files.

if it is just follow these steps...


1.Insert and boot from your WindowsXP CD.
2.At the first R=Repair option, press the R key
3.Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair.
Typically this will be #1
4.Change to the drive that has the CD ROM.
5.CD i386
6.expand ntkrnlmp.ex_ C:\Windows\System32\ntoskrnl.exe
7.If WindowsXP is installed in a different location, just make the necessary change to C:\Windows
8.Take out the CD ROM and type exit

Once the memory locations are allocated for a task, especially if they are in a sensitive area, it's hard to reclaim them and Windows gets confused. Since you can open Task Manager you should be able to go to File->New task and run regedit. Or you can go to the Applications tab and right click->New task->regedit. Then go to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

and also check

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

(also look in \RunOnce in each)

and see if the executable is being loaded there. If it's not there, do a CTL-F to search for it in the registry. If it is there, delete the whole key (making note of ALL the values in case you really need it). Exit regedit and reboot.

I say make a note of this because neither Symantec nor Trend Micro has a virus definition that drops that .exe so it may be something that a legitimate program has installed. On the other hand, it may be a random name that the virus creates. Look at the full pathname of the file in regedit and that should give you a clue as to whether it's legitimate or not.

This should keep Windows from getting confused. Hopefully then you'll be able to do some damage control.

I had this issue with a friends computer and pulled my hair out for at least a day and a half. I managed to find workarounds on the web that call for replacing that file along with a number of others but in the end it turned out to be a waste of time.

Ended up pulling the harddrive and hooking it into mine as a slave. Took all of important files off (unfortunately no porn)

I could never get a firm answer about what actually caused it, however I am assuming the hard drive corupted a sector and for some reason would always go back to that same sector during bootup.

I now have them on Acronis True Image 8 waitting for the hard drive to totally fail.

It sounds like a program is not operating correctly causing your system to freeze up. Have you tried using an XP disc to run a repair?

i dont know if it was mentioned above but do you have conflicting (two) anti viruses. that could be the cause
