War In Iraq/Terrorists

Jeez, what happened to all the conservatives around this place that used to so vociferously support Bush's war in Iraq??? Oh well, maybe this article partially explains what happened:

http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2006/10/25/generals/index_np.html?source=rss

The article is about 2 retired American generals that are calling for a change in the House and Senate. A few interesting quotes:

"The generals, and an active-duty senior military official, told Salon in separate interviews that they believe a Democratic victory will help reverse course from what they consider to be a disastrous Bush administration policy in Iraq."

"The best thing that can happen right now is for one or both of our houses to go Democratic so we can have some oversight," Batiste, who led the Army's 1st Infantry Division in Iraq in 2004 and 2005, told Salon. Batiste describes himself as a "lifelong Republican." But now, he said, "It is time for a change."

Ouch!

Good find, mindido! Sometimes it's time for a change. After Iraq, the exponentially increasing debt/deficit, and the lack of any real middle class benefits, it is most definitely time for this change.

That is not to say that change for the sake of change is good. However, as the Republicans haven't secured the border between the US and Mexico, secured the ports, and continually give massive tax breaks to the oil industry, it's time for the Democrats to right the ship, so to speak.

I can't do anything about it personally, being a Canadian, but US politics is so interesting, at least compared to here in Canada, though these days, things are a bit more interesting having no party in control. However, the current government worries me with their lack of sense on many issues, though it has been useful in its support of Israel and the placement of a couple of terrorist groups on the list of banned organisations.

OK I'll bite, I'm bored anyway. ;)

...partially explains what happened:
Not really. It was an article by the insanely liberal salon.com, what else would you expect from them? It was also 2 Generals out of (how many?) only one of which was identified as a Republican (and I use that moniker loosely). Instead of changing Capitol Hill wouldn't it be easier for him to just change parties? Sounds like he was never really a Republican anyway. I mean 'lifelong Republican' with everything they stand for and then suddenly "it's time for a change" because of the direction of the war? Now THAT'S dedication. The Republican Party and the Armed Services must be really proud of him...

It's hard to believe any General would support the party of 'cut and run'. Does he seriously believe someone like Nancy Pelosi has a firm grip on reality? We gladly let him go. :angryrazz

On the other hand, a fully Democratic House and Senate would guarantee a Republican White House in order to maintain balance. Hmmmm.....

@Iceberg: I agree with you. We haven't done enough to secure either the Mexican border or the Canadian border and all associated ports. But tax breaks to big oil? Which ones are you referring to? President Bush has pushed and supported legislation that would open up more Gulf of Mexico and Alaskan exploration, but tax breaks... I don't know. You may be right, but I don't know of any.

OFFicerJACK, here are some stories which describe these tax breaks to big oil:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A63958-2005Apr18.html

http://www.ucsusa.org/clean_vehicles/fuel_economy/subsidizing-big-oil.html

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2005/04/22/MNG45CDDBS1.DTL

As for the Canadian border, it has its weak points, but by and large, it is secure. Of course, improvements can be made (increasing screening technology), but it is far less porous than the Mexican border.

And in response to this:

The Gulf of Mexico may yield a fair bit more oil, but Alaska, not really. The Alaska National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), it is estimated, would yield a supply which would add only so much oil to the US supply that it would reduce the price at the pump by at most a measly 10 cents per gallon. What really controls the oil prices is OPEC and since the US is not a part of the group, they have no real say (apart from the relationship between the current White House and the Saudis) in production.

The best way to save money is to purchase hybrids or to force the big three automakers (which are losing millions, even billions of dollars as a result of their lack of desire to make progress on technology) to mass produce hybrids. If they were to do this, people would be purchasing them because they would be saving hundreds of dollars a month on gasoline. As well, since they would be consuming less fuel, less money would go to the Middle East and would line the pockets of those with relationships with terrorist groups, further weakening them.

I am afarid that Hybrids only appear to be the solution. The problem with the Hybrids is that they require a large energy storage unit - BATTERIES. And with most of the hybrids on the road now require the equivilant of 5 regular car batteries. What kind of toxic mess are we going to end up with 5 times the number of lead acid batteries and how to dispose of them?

What really needs to happen is for the car companies to produce multifuel engines. Hell the fench and sweedes have been producing multifuel engine for the aircaft and marine industries for decades now. A small advancement that can be done now with the current technology. I now that GM has been making "flexfuel" engines for a couple of years now. They just now have started to promote them. With multifuel motors we would not be limited to just ethanol and gas or E85. Plus the congress here HAS to allow new refineries to be built, (last one in 1972!!) The new refineries should be able to manufacture just about anything that can be used as fuel and with alot less emissons than we have know.

I can't agree with you more! Anything we can do to weaken these poor dumb bastards the better!

LOL, I was just going to edit my post when I saw yours Iceberg, but I'll post a new one.

I saw your first link when I was composing this post, it's from Apr.15, 2005. The second link of yours talks about tax structure from 1991 (the OTHER Bush :) ). I agree that some reorganization of the tax code may be necessary, but you have to remember that in '91 General Electric paid ZERO in taxes, yet people still bought their TVs and VCRs (although I have no idea why!!! :) ) Yes, ANWR would not create much oil, however as a total energy package it would help the natural gas situation. There is talk about Canadian oil sand lately that looks VERY promising. Not sure how they do it, maybe put the oily sand in a centrifuge?

From CNN.com Apr. 26 2006 during the $70/barrel times

Bush seeks to curb oil tax breaks:

Abstract:
"Record oil prices and large cash flows also mean that Congress has got to understand that these energy companies don't need unnecessary tax breaks," said Bush, a longtime tax-cut advocate. "Taxpayers don't need to be paying for certain of these expenses on behalf of the energy companies."

Bush also repeated earlier calls for speeding up the process for building new gasoline refineries as well as opening the Arctic National Wildlife Reserve to oil exploration.

He called on Congress to expand the tax credit for hybrid vehicles, making all buyers of the fuel-efficient vehicles this year eligible for federal tax credits, rather than having caps on the number of vehicles eligible for the tax break.

Same day, different news source, The Washington Post:

GOP Blocks Measures Boosting Taxes on Oil Companies' Profits

(Bush opposed to three Senate provisions in the proposed legislation)

Abstract:
The biggest of the provisions would change accounting rules that apply to oil in storage. Currently, oil companies
are allowed to calculate the taxable value of their inventories based on the value of the oldest stocks, when oil may have been worth $30 a barrel. But much of the inventory may have been pumped from the ground when oil was selling for more than double that. Critics say that understates the value of the companies' oil supplies purely to lower their tax payments. Another would prevent oil companies from deducting from their U.S. taxes the royalties paid to foreign governments. The third, which would repeal the provision in last year's energy law allowing companies to write off in two years the cost of geological exploration, received new life after Bush's speech, Senate tax aides said.

Those measures were first proposed by Sen. Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine) to pay for a $500 tax credit to defray home energy costs. In letters to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) and House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.), Snowe suggested yesterday that the Senate oil tax measures be taken out of the broader tax bills and passed separately to pay for alternative-energy development.

But the Bush administration has strongly opposed Snowe's measures from the start, especially the accounting change, which would hit the five major oil companies to the tune of $4.3 billion in two years. In letters to Congress on Feb. 23, Treasury Secretary John W. Snow used underscored text to stress that "the President's senior advisors would recommend that the President veto the legislation if this provision remains."

Giving tax breaks to big oil doesn't seem to lower prices at the pump. Tax breaks certainly isn't the reason why GE TVs are cheap. That is caused by minimalistic engineering and offshore manufacturing. But people need to remember that NOT giving tax breaks to big oil does NOT translate to lower oil prices either, just more income for Congress to spend. And will they spend it on you? And how do you expect big oil will make up for the $4.3 billion loss? I'll leave that up to your imagination. Which is the lesser of two evils?

Stu,

Something tells me (I could be wrong) that executing Saddam won't make a lick of difference. Its too bad.

Jeez, I really hate being on the road all the time. I rarely have time for the interesting conversations on here that we used to have.

Anyway, good old GW must be stomping around the White House today looking for his dog (remember his idiot statement saying that he'll stay the course no matter if only his dog is supporting him?). Well, the Iraq Study Group Report was released today and its not very supportive of old GW's "stay the course" approach.

If your interested in actually reading it, you'll find it here:

http://www.usip.org/?gclid=CN3HhMSz_4gCFQ30JAodOSOS3g

Or, if you want, check Amazon.com and you can pay $7.00 for it. Just more evidence that this clown will go down as the worst President in history.

BTW, did anyone else see GW's dad (41) break down the other day when he was talking about Jeb? Speculation is that 41 is REALLY, REALLY pissed at GW for making sure that Jeb now has no chance of being President.

What a dufus old GW has turned out to be.

Hearing that there were 3,000 troops helping to train the Iraqi's was shocking. I'm not an expert but i know a little bit of math, what the fuck.

Not sure what you mean by this. If anything, 3,000 troops sounds really low to me. One would think that there would be 50,000 to 100,000 troops doing that. Then, maybe, we would be able to get out of there one of these days. If there are only 3,000 trainers it would take forever to get Iraq's army and police up to par.

Israel? No. Saudi Arabia is the biggest terrorist-supporting nation. 15 out of 19 of the 9/11 hijackers were from there and yet the current White House is close to the heads of that country.

The nation most attacked by terrorists on the planet is Israel. How many thousands of innocent Israelis have been killed by Hamas, Hezbollah, Al'Aqsa, Islamic Jihad, etc.? Too high to count.

If you plan on rebutting by slamming Israel for killing innocent Palestinians and Lebanese, you can forget it! The reason most of these innocent civilians are dead is because they are used as human shields by terrorist groups in an attempt to secure immunity. Some of these civilians are not so innocent, as well, as they have supported terrorists and have actually volunteered to be human shields.

Until these civilians renounce terrorism, they will continue to pay for their lack of decency. In my view, their deaths are unfortunate, but their delusional state brought this fate upon them.

I agree, we are talking not about the israeli people but we talk about Jews.
They control the world and everyone opposing them dies. (at least they try)
Is it not that the word Jew is kept more silent than the maffia in the USA?
People are afraid of them because they control everything; Also the wars.
They are already 3600 years bizzy to control and rule this world. And as nobody does anything against it they continue.
How can it that they use palestinians as slave; Isn't the slavery outbanned? Why do you think that they fight back.
You must take a closer look at what the Jews are doing to non-jews and then you might understand.

**edit**
Ice, i will go into this later (maybe by PM (if your interested)) ; I don't mean anybody harm with this but some people use "friendspolitics" and that is what i disapprove. I rather have people working for me that have proved to be able to step the next step on a ladder than to accept people who are "bought" in. However those people can do what they want and they are doing it; For over hundreds of years now so we know something is wrong because people (in general) are not into war , they rather have peace and share things with others.
However this world is teached how to "be hating" about someone else and thats wrong.
And as noone is doing anyting against it there must be a reason and i think i know the reason.
You can see thats something is leaking and people are doing everything to get rid of the water; Why not just turn the valve closed?

Thats exactly what i'm saying, the report says this is how many trainers are on the ground. This is why it has taken so long min. Some teams are made up of as little as 16 men trying to train these people. Crazy stuff.

OK, I thought that was what you meant but I haven't had an opportunity to read the report yet (hopefully this weekend). 3,000 troops huh? Thats it? Thats all??? Hmmmmm, what exactly is that telling us? I'm not sure of all implications but one is certainly that they aren't taking training as seriously as they've told us. At that rate, we'd be there for the next 20 to 30 years! Maybe thats what they actually want.

WOW i am just in aw of this thread. How many stupid people are there on here.
After 18 months in Iraq I'd say I'm more up on the know than any of you watching, and getting your info from the news and web sites. So much to comment on but ill comment on the recent post for now.
1st, to say the Jewish people are to blame for anything is stupid. They do not control the world, or America. They are in the land they occupied before any one, they are bombed and shelled daily. School buses blown up, women and children gunned down. They have every right to protect them selfs, if that means preemptive strikes so be it.
3000 troops just for training is alot, just cause were in the army dose not mean were qualified to teach any one. How many instructors do you think there are at boot camp. One good drill instructor cant teach 50 men or more no problem. yes this war has had mistakes, but we were justified in going in. We found weapons of mass destruction, why the white house never pushed that i dont know. Just Mustard gas shells, there was enough found to kill over 400,000 people. if that dont meet your classification of mass destruction that what the hell dose.
And last alot of you say how all that is being said in American is not against the troops. Well speaking as a member of the 3rd AD at Fort hood. We sure feel like your all against us. Saying were commiting war crimes and what not. As soon as i recover from a broken leg, I'm going back of my own free will.
So to all you that support us and what we do, God Bless. And the rest, just be feel damn lucky were putting our asses on the line for something you clearly dont understand.

Wow we are so stupid. Where have you been my whole life. Comparing the training of boot camp and an entire country makes complete sense. You're right everythings going good over there, i guess i blinked.

Yes things are gong good over there. coward like you would have no idea. What all do you think were training them to do. Why dont you do a little home work 1st before you open your trap.
